GET READY!
Now is the time to start adding light in
your chicken house
to insure continued egg production during
the fall and winter months. Remember:
chickens lay eggs based on the number of
hours of daylight, not the temperature. Set
up a timer to duplicate the number of summer
daylight hours.
A 40 watt bulb is all that’s necessary.

SAVE YOUR DUCKS!
It is extremely important that ducks AND
CHICKS have secure shelter from weather and
predators! Local fox can be a challenge to
their safety.

Fall
Checklist for Gardeners: Sept/Oct |
|
|
Clean up:
Rake those
leaves and incorporate them in your
compost. To encourage faster break
down for quicker use, run over your
raked leaves with your lawn mower.
This really works great if you have
a bagger on the back of your mower.
Never compost any
diseased plants (bag and dispose of
them instead.)
Stay on top of
those weeds, especially if they’ve
gone to seed. Otherwise, many of
them will show up for an unwanted
repeat performance next year.
 |
| |
Pruning/Deadheading:
It’s okay to lightly prune or shear
some perennials in fall; Russian
sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia) and
lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
are exceptions – wait until early
May to prune these two plants.
Most flowering shrubs do not respond
well to fall pruning. This is
because it sends a signal to the
plant to put on new growth at a time
when it needs to move towards
dormancy for the winter.

Plant!
Yes, fall is a great time to plant.
With shorter days and cooler nights,
many plants are able put their
energy into root development rather
than top growth/blooming.
Just remember:
- for best fall planting
success, choose plants that are
one zone hardier than your own
(for example, if you are in Zone
6, choose a plant rated for Zone
5 hardiness)
- planting success is better
if you get those new plants in 4
weeks before the first hard
frost. In zone 6, the first hard
frost is generally late October,
so complete your fall planting
by the first week of October.
- water regularly for the
first two weeks to get your new
plants established.
- Divide and plant your spring
blooming perennials now; don’t
divide fall blooming perennials
until spring.
- Spring blooming bulbs can be
planted as late as mid-December,
as long as the soil is not
frozen yet. Generally, spring
bulbs need just 6 weeks of
“chill” to bloom in spring.

About CORE
Why is CORE different? In a
word…balance. When you add more meat to
your dog’s daily feeding program, you
|
 |
|
also add more
protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus and
calories. And since everyday health
requires a delicate nutritional
equation, these levels must |
be managed to create
balance, not excess, especially when fed
everyday as the sole source of
your pet’s nutrition. CORE provides
incredibly flavorful, protein-focused
nutrition with nothing in excess and
everything in balance. |

thoughtfully chosen |
 |
|
ingredients for a lifetime of

About California Natural
Cheap pet food
ingredients, such as protein fillers, or
even premium ingredients can be highly
allergic to pets with sensitive systems.
That's why California Natural refuses to
use them in their production. Made with
the fewest ingredients to eliminate
potential allergens, California Natural
combines just one protein, one fat and
one carbohydrate source, creating a
hypoallergenic pet food. |

About Innova
Just as dieticians recommend
following the U.S.D.A. food pyramid for
our own dietary needs, Innova applies
this same principle when creating foods
for our animal friends. Incorporating
elements from the five food-pyramid
groups - meat, dairy, vegetables, fruit
and grain - plus essential fats and
oils, Innova delivers farm-fresh
ingredients to your dog or cat for
holistic health.
